Neel Kamal Chapagain
Neel Kamal Chapagain believes in contextual learning - that is to pursue learning as a continous process that not only connects the learner for the purpose of learning, but also positions the learning process integrally into the contexts within which one learns. Growing up in rural context in Eastern Nepal, he initially pursued ’learning’ as guided by the school curriculum but often dreamed of alternate ways of learning and doing. Coincidentally entering into architecture for his undergraduate degree somehow enabled him to look into ‘contexts’ in a much broader context. Venturing into Upper Mustang for an exploratory thesis for the completion of his B.Arch. degree, coupled with earlier educational and professional explorations into the cities of Patan, Bhaktapur, Janakpur and his own rural contexts in Eastern Nepal, gradually drew him into the areas of vernacular architecture, architectural heritage and conservation, among many other strands of thoughts. Landing a job as conservation architect after his B.Arch, then gradually being exposed to international scenarios - starting from Bhutan, then to Italy, Hawaii and Wisconsin, an academic and professional career emerged as Neel Kamal’s passion, profession and personal agenda. In the next phase of life, becoming a father, brought in another dimension to this journey ushering into a clear intersections of all these heritage ideas into education. While involved in formal education at university level, he is passionate about the discourses of ‘unschooling’, ‘deschooling’ and others, that led the formulation of ‘contextual learning’ as a pragmatic yet ambitious venture that he actively collaborates with his family - the current members of CLL. His research and teaching pedagogy are influenced by the idea of contextual learning. Currently, he is also a professor at Kathmandu University. A few of his papers and presentations are listed below.
